Speaking with the US in Ummah, the Iranian team had discussions aimed at removing US sanctions and advancing the nuclear problem, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ismail Bekayi.
US President Donald Trump wrote to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in early March, threatening a military reaction unless Iran reached a deal with Tehran over its nuclear program. The US opposed direct discussions on the nuclear program, and the only way to open the window for negotiations was through third-party mediation, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a response letter to Tehran.
The United Kingdom, China, France, Germany, Russia, the United States, and Iran came to a nuclear agreement in 2015 that includes the easing of sanctions in return for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program. Under President Trump, the United States reimposed sanctions on Tehran and withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in May 2018. Iran reciprocated by announcing that it was easing its obligations under the agreement, dropping the prohibition on nuclear research and uranium enrichment levels.
